Charlotte has been selected by Bloomberg Philanthropies as one of 25 U.S. cities to join Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities, a three-year initiative aimed at implementing transformative local solutions to build low-carbon, resilient, and economically thriving communities. The city's Mayor Vi Lyles expressed the city's commitment by stating, "Charlotte will lead as a global city by continuously improving, protecting, and preserving the environment, its community, and economy, while ensuring equity and resilience for today’s and future generations."
Bloomberg Philanthropies chose Charlotte for this initiative based on its leadership and ambition to build resilient, equitable communities. The city has demonstrated persistence in advancing community prosperity and economic development amid the climate crisis. Charlotte continues to focus on sustainable initiatives, such as setting a 50/50 modeshift target and investing in an equitable, sustainable transportation system.
With over $400 billion in federal funding available to local governments through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act, Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities aims to help cities access and implement historic funding for critical local projects. Anticipated solutions in Charlotte could include developing affordable, energy-efficient housing, investing in electric vehicles and infrastructure, and expanding access to clean energy.
The Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative is the newest effort by Bloomberg Philanthropies to support local climate action in the United States, following the success of the American Cities Climate Challenge. Through these initiatives, cities like Charlotte are empowered to address pressing challenges and work towards a more sustainable and equitable future for their residents.
