Senator Thom Tillis has introduced two bills aimed at combating sanctuary cities and ensuring the safety of communities by deporting criminal illegal aliens. The first bill, the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act, seeks to provide justice for victims harmed by sanctuary policies. Senator Tillis expressed, "For too long, we have watched local jurisdictions...release dangerous criminals back into their communities and put innocent lives at risk."

The second bill, the Immigration Detainer Enforcement Act, aims to clarify detainer authority and incentivize cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the Department of Homeland Security. Senator Tillis emphasized, "It is time for Congress to step in and put an end to this madness by holding sanctuary cities accountable and empowering ICE to gain custody of criminal illegal immigrants."

Senator Ted Budd, a co-sponsor of the bills, highlighted the importance of enforcing immigration laws and ensuring public safety. He stated, "Our bill will put lawless cities on notice and will incentivize them to enforce our laws and keep our streets safe."

Senator Tim Scott also expressed concerns about the risks posed by sanctuary cities, stating, "President Biden’s open border policies...are putting Americans’ lives at risk." Senator Scott emphasized the need to empower law enforcement and hold accountable both criminals and officials who enable them.

Senator Pete Ricketts echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with ICE to remove dangerous criminals from the streets. He stated, "Adding incentives for cooperation with ICE will get dangerous criminals off our streets."

The bills have garnered support from several other senators, including Ted Cruz and Roger Marshall. Senator Marshall emphasized the need for accountability for sanctuary cities, stating, "It’s long past time for these sanctuary cities to face the consequences and understand the reality of their actions."

The introduction of these bills follows recent incidents involving individuals benefiting from sanctuary city policies and committing violent crimes. These incidents include the brutal murder of Laken Riley and other cases where criminals were released despite immigration detainers.

In response to these incidents and the ongoing challenges posed by sanctuary policies, Senator Tillis and his co-sponsors are pushing for legislative action to address the issue. The bills aim to provide justice for victims, enhance cooperation between law enforcement agencies, and ultimately ensure the safety and security of communities impacted by sanctuary city policies.
