Bryce Young, a prominent NFL player, recently hosted the Young 9 Foundation’s CareSource Bryce Young Football Procamp at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. Reflecting on his childhood experiences attending basketball camps in Southern California, including one hosted by Kobe Bryant, Young expressed the significance of creating lasting memories for young participants.
“I don’t think I did ask Kobe anything. I was probably way too nervous for it,” Young recalled about his time at Bryant’s camp. He described how Bryant interacted with kids and left a memorable impression on them.
Now hosting camps himself, Young shared an amusing encounter with a young camper who asked if he had $1,000. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I do.’ He was like, ‘So do you have $1,000?’ I was like, ‘I do, I do have it.’ And he went crazy,” said Young.
As a former No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, Young aims to impart valuable lessons and perspectives to the next generation. “It’s definitely humbling just to be able to be in a situation now where I can help my own,” he stated.
The event marked the second year that the Young 9 Foundation organized a camp in Charlotte. Coaches and teammates joined forces to support this initiative aimed at equipping young people with tools to prioritize mental health.
“I’m super grateful for my team for the work that goes into this and for me being able to interact with all the campers,” said Young. He emphasized his commitment to fostering joy among participants while addressing mental health awareness.
Young attributes much of his success to growing up in an environment where mental health was openly discussed. “I credit a lot of what I’ve been able to accomplish in life and in football because of that,” he noted.
The camp occurred during a busy period between OTAs and Panthers minicamp—a strategic decision by Young intended to provide perspective amid professional commitments.
“It’s a great opportunity just to gain some perspective,” explained Young about balancing work with community engagement through such events. Observing children enjoying football brought him personal fulfillment as he prepared for upcoming challenges with renewed enthusiasm.
