Charlotte FC secured their eighth consecutive victory with a late 2-1 win over the New England Revolution. Despite being outshot 20-6 and trailing in possession, Charlotte managed to clinch the result at Bank of America Stadium.
Head Coach Dean Smith addressed concerns about the team’s style of play before the match, stating, “he’s not worried about how wins ‘look’.”
The match began with Brandt Bronico giving Charlotte an early lead in the 12th minute. However, New England responded quickly when Ignatius Ganago equalized in the 24th minute. Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina was unable to maintain his clean sheet streak but made a crucial save on Carles Gil’s attempt in the 86th minute, keeping Charlotte level.
Two minutes later, Idan Toklomati scored the decisive goal by heading in an Ashley Westwood free-kick cross. This goal marked Toklomati’s eighth of the season and extended his run of goal contributions to six straight MLS matches.
With this result, Charlotte FC moved ahead of Nashville SC into third place in the Eastern Conference after Nashville lost at home to Atlanta United. The eight-game winning streak is now the second-longest single-season run in Major League Soccer history outside of the shootout era, behind only Seattle Sounders’ nine-game streak from 2018 (https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/seattle-sounders-make-history-with-ninth-straight-win).
Charlotte FC will have a break for international fixtures before facing Inter Miami and Lionel Messi at Bank of America Stadium on September 13.
