Charlotte FC is close to reaching the MLS playoffs for the third year in a row, after moving from tenth place to third in the Eastern Conference since July. This rise comes on the back of an eight-match winning streak that began on July 12.
The team will face Inter Miami CF this weekend, needing a win to tie for the longest league winning streak in Major League Soccer’s post-shootout era. A victory would be Charlotte’s ninth straight and could secure them a playoff spot, depending on other results.
Their first loss of the season was against Inter Miami in Fort Lauderdale, when Tadeo Allende scored the only goal. Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez assisted that goal but will miss Saturday’s match due to a suspension following a post-match altercation in the League Cup final.
Inter Miami leads the overall series between these teams with four wins, two losses, and two draws. Charlotte last defeated Inter Miami in 2023 with a 1-0 win on Decision Day, which secured their first-ever playoff appearance.
A win over Inter Miami would put Charlotte FC on track for another postseason run but would not guarantee it immediately. For Charlotte to clinch a playoff berth this weekend, they also need New York Red Bulls to drop points against Portland Timbers. The Red Bulls have struggled recently, winning only three of their last ten matches and securing just one road victory out of fourteen away games this season. Portland has performed well at home with six wins, three losses, and five draws at Providence Park.
In related playoff scenarios, Atlanta United will be eliminated from contention if they lose or draw against Columbus or if Chicago beats New York City.
If Charlotte wins Saturday night’s match, confirmation of their playoff status may not come until early Sunday morning.
