Charlotte FC will host New York City FC in a Major League Soccer match, according to a May 13 announcement. The two teams last met in the playoffs, with Charlotte winning their previous encounter at Citi Field.

This match is significant as it marks the return of New York City FC to Bank of America Stadium, where Charlotte aims to leverage home support. The club looks to build on recent performances and continue its positive momentum before the World Cup break.

Head Coach Dean Smith said there was a lack of energy and tempo in the first half against FC Cincinnati. “After addressing the team at halftime, Ashley Westwood straight away won a free kick and played the ball forward to Idan Toklomati to get a shot off, breathing a bit of life into the squad and supporters at Bank of America Stadium.” Smith added that maintaining high energy from kickoff will be crucial against New York City FC.

For this fixture, Charlotte will be without captain Ashley Westwood due to suspension after accumulating five yellow cards this season. Likely midfield starters include Pep Biel and Djibril Diani. Biel has contributed goals or assists in four of his last five matches, while Diani recently recorded his first assist of the season after starting three consecutive games. Other possible options for midfield include Brandt Bronico—who has appeared in ten regular season matches—and Luca de la Torre or Aron John, who could provide additional depth.

April brought mixed results for Charlotte FC but recent outings have shown improvement both offensively and defensively. The club hopes these positive trends continue as they approach an important stretch before league play pauses for international competition.

Charlotte Football Club participates in Major League Soccer as part of the Eastern Conference, operates as a professional soccer team based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and was established as an expansion franchise with its inaugural season in 2022,according to the official website.
