With extreme temperatures expected from June 23 to 25, Charlotte-Mecklenburg government agencies and partners are mobilizing resources to support vulnerable residents. Public Health advises taking precautions against heat-related illnesses, which can worsen as body temperature rises. Recommendations include limiting outdoor physical activity, staying hydrated, and wearing appropriate clothing.

High-risk groups for heat-related illnesses include people over 65, infants and children, pregnant women, those with heart or lung conditions, outdoor workers, and urban residents. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides more information on managing extreme heat.

From June 23-25, Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office, and homeless service providers will monitor weather conditions and community needs due to the extreme heat.

The Charlotte Area Transit System offers free transportation to designated cooling stations such as day services centers, recreation centers, senior centers, and spraygrounds. Locations include Roof Above’s Day Services Center at 945 N College St., Block Love Charlotte’s Day Services Center at 2738 N Graham St., and The Relatives: On Ramp at 2219 Freedom Dr.

Recreation centers open for relief from the heat include David B. Waymer Recreation Center in Huntersville and Eastway Regional Recreation Center in Charlotte. Spraygrounds available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily are located at Clarks Creek Community Park and Romare Bearden Park among others.

Outdoor water attractions like Double Oaks Family Aquatic Center are also open during specific hours throughout the week. Libraries within the area generally operate from Monday through Saturday with varying hours.

Mecklenburg County is providing free box fans to seniors aged 60 or older and adults with disabilities while supplies last. Proof of age and residency is required for collection.

For energy bill assistance related to cooling emergencies or crises in Mecklenburg County, residents can apply through the Crisis Intervention Program by visiting MeckNC.gov/Energy or calling 704-336-3000. Assistance continues until funds run out.

Residents interested in helping can donate through organizations such as HeartsfortheInvisibleCLT.org or SalvationArmyCharlotte.org.
