Charlotte area lakes are preparing for an influx of boaters and swimmers as summer approaches. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is urging residents to be aware of water conditions before embarking on their freshwater adventures.

Swim advisories may be issued when water bodies pose a public health threat due to factors such as sewage spills, chemical spills, or harmful algal blooms. Residents are encouraged to take precautions to ensure safe experiences on the water this summer.

To stay informed, individuals can sign up for Char-Meck Alerts by texting MECKNOSWIM to 888-777 to receive swim advisories directly on their phones. Email alerts are also available. Algal blooms, which can appear green like pea soup or spilled paint and often emit a foul odor, should be avoided as they may be toxic. In case of suspected pollution in the lakes, residents are advised to report it by contacting 311.
