Offseason rosters can be crowded, making it difficult for individual players to stand out. However, Chau Smith-Wade has managed to capture attention during OTAs and minicamp with the Carolina Panthers.
Jaycee Horn, a Pro Bowl cornerback, has been particularly impressed by Smith-Wade’s performance. “Man, I think he’s been the most impressive player,” Horn stated without hesitation regarding Smith-Wade’s progress.
Last season, the Panthers released Troy Hill and decided to start rookie Smith-Wade over former corner Dane Jackson in Week 13. Coach Dave Canales remarked on this decision: “Chau took advantage of an opportunity…He made tackles; he owned his leverage for the most part.” By the end of the season, Smith-Wade had started four games before an injury placed him on injured reserve.
Despite signing safety Tre’von Moehrig in free agency, who many thought would take over the nickel role, it is still Smith-Wade taking first-team reps from the slot during OTAs and minicamp. Defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley praised Smith-Wade’s communication skills: “He’s got intentionality about how he goes with his work.”
Horn observed that Smith-Wade quickly grasped the defense: “He got the defense in one year,” noting his ability to make calls for safeties and line up at multiple positions. Cooley added that Smith-Wade’s comfort level allows for versatility within the team: “You listen to him communicating…he’s flying around, playing fast.”
Smith-Wade’s growth in understanding both his role and those of his teammates makes him a reliable presence on the field. Horn appreciates having Smith-Wade nearby: “The communication is the biggest thing for me…I can depend on Chau every time they break the huddle.”
In summary, Chau Smith-Wade has emerged as a significant player during OTAs and minicamp due to his adaptability and strong communication skills.
