Following the enactment of N.C. House Bill 948, known as the PAVE Act, the Board of County Commissioners is preparing to introduce a countywide referendum for the November ballot.
Commissioner Vilma D. Leake from District 2 will host two community meetings to inform and educate Mecklenburg County residents about transportation issues and the proposed referendum.
The first meeting will take place at Steele Creek AME Zion Church on Tuesday, July 22, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., located at 1500 Shopton Road, Charlotte, NC. Residents are requested to RSVP by July 21.
The second meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at West Charlotte Recreation Center, located at 2401 Kendall Dr., Charlotte, NC. RSVPs are requested by July 28.
These meetings will include presentations from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) with information on services and plans for regional transit expansion. The proposed referendum involves a potential 1-cent sales tax increase.
A special meeting of the Board of County Commissioners is set for July 30 to discuss the language of the referendum. Additionally, a public hearing will be held during its regular meeting on August 6 where residents can express their views before members vote on whether to place it on the ballot. If approved, funds generated by this tax would be allocated towards transportation projects in Mecklenburg County such as roads, railways, and buses.
