Mecklenburg County residents are encouraged to participate in the third annual walk on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) to support elders and their caregivers. The event is co-hosted by Age-Friendly Mecklenburg, AARP Charlotte, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina.
The walk will take place on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Freedom Park in Charlotte. Participants are invited to wear purple to help raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina and other community leaders from Charlotte-Mecklenburg will join the event.
Statistics indicate that one in ten older Americans suffer from elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation annually. However, it is believed that many cases go unreported due to insufficient social supports that could facilitate reporting. Research suggests only one in fourteen cases reach authorities.
WEAAD aims to mobilize communities against elder abuse and has been observed since 2006. It underscores the commitment to justice for all and encourages social media participation using #WalkforWEAAD.
Further details can be obtained from Age-Friendly Mecklenburg by phone or email. The walk is organized with support from AARP Charlotte and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina as part of efforts by Age-Friendly Mecklenburg to enhance life quality for older adults.
