CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers’ senior defensive assistant Dom Capers has returned to the field for training camp after recovering from a torn right hamstring. Despite his injury in May, Capers prioritized being back for the start of training camp.
“I was not going to miss the start of training camp,” Capers said. His commitment was tested when he sustained the injury during OTAs, which required surgery on May 30.
Capers is known for his dedication and meticulous preparation. He has been involved in coaching since 1972 and has maintained a strong presence on the practice field throughout his career. Head coach Dave Canales described him as “so regimented.”
While recuperating, Capers remained engaged by watching practice film from home. Defensive line coach Todd Wash noted that Capers frequently called him to stay updated on practice activities.
Physical therapist Kylan Smith reported that Capers is progressing well in rehab and is eager to return to full activity, including using the elliptical machine regularly.
Capers’ experience and influence are valued by players and coaches alike. Rookie outside linebackers coach AC Carter praised Capers’ impact, stating, “I think having coach Dom is a blessing.” Outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum highlighted how Capers brings a fresh perspective to young players.
“You’re not going to keep Dom down,” Canales affirmed about Capers’ return. “You can’t keep a good man down for very long, so he’s back out here where he belongs.”
