The HOMES (Helping Out Mecklenburg homeowners with Economic Support) program has distributed over $1 million in economic assistance grants since the application period began on July 1. Nearly 2,000 homeowners have received grants this year, and funds remain available for those who qualify.
Mecklenburg County homeowners may be eligible for up to $650 in support, while residents of the Town of Davidson could receive an additional grant of up to $534. To qualify, applicants must have lived in their home for at least three years, meet specific household income criteria, and have no more than one delinquent tax bill within the past three years. There is no age restriction, homeownership does not require a paid-off mortgage, and individuals whose mortgage company pays their taxes through escrow are also eligible.
Applicants need to provide 2024 income verification documents such as W-2, W-4, 1099, or SSI forms during the application process. The application is available online at MeckNC.gov/4HOMES and typically takes less than ten minutes to complete. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis until funding runs out.
Residents can apply by submitting an online application via MeckNC.gov/4HOMES; emailing completed forms and verification information; dropping off paperwork at several community resource centers or the Assessor’s Office; or mailing materials to the Department of Community Resources at 3205 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The deadline for applications is November 21.
“Homeowners are feeling the pinch of rising prices, and every bit of financial assistance helps,” said Community Services Manager Shakirah Francis. “If you fall within the eligibility requirements, we encourage you to get the support available to you and your family.”
In 2024, Mecklenburg County schools enrolled a total of 153,537 students—a slight decrease from previous years according to data from https://www.dpi.nc.gov/. Last year’s HOMES program awarded over $4 million across 4,700 approved applications.
