Mecklenburg County staff assisted over 11,226 residents with energy bills through the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) during the 2024-25 winter season. This federal program helps households meet their home heating needs, preventing them from having to choose between heating and other essential expenses.
From December 1 to March 31, more than $4.2 million was distributed in one-time payments of $300, $400, or $500 directly to utility companies on behalf of applicants. The number of applications for this season increased by 21% compared to the previous year, with over 17,000 people applying.
“This was a record year for our LIEAP program. We know many residents faced higher energy bills this season and our team worked hard to make sure as many eligible applicants as possible were able to receive assistance,” said Marquette Kilpatrick, social services manager.
LIEAP is managed by the Department of Community Resources and is part of Mecklenburg County’s efforts under #TheMeckEffect initiative. More information about the program can be found at DCR.MeckNC.gov/energy.
