When Hurricane Helene struck the Catawba River watershed in 2024, the resulting floods caused significant damage to communities below Mountain Island Lake dam. The flooding affected around 170 homes within the floodplain, with 46 homes sustaining irreparable damage. Four homes on Upper Riverhaven Drive were washed away entirely.

After the floodwaters receded, recovery efforts began and continue in both the area around and below Mountain Island Lake. Mecklenburg County Storm Water Services has been collaborating with homeowners on buyout programs or home elevation projects. This ongoing initiative represents an investment of about $13.5 million and aims not only to support residents impacted by the storm but also to lower future flood risks for the community.

A homeowner who participated in the retroFIT program reported minimized impact to her property during Hurricane Helene, highlighting how these efforts are providing practical benefits as well as long-term protection for local residents.

Mecklenburg County schools enrolled a total of 153,537 students in the 2022-23 school year according to data from state education officials (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). During that period, enrollment saw a slight decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous year (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/).
