Mecklenburg County Public Health is set to observe National HIV Testing Day on June 27 by offering free testing for HIV. The initiative also includes providing information and referrals for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a medication aimed at preventing HIV.
“With advancements in HIV treatment and prevention methods, we now have the tools we need to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and it starts with getting tested and knowing your status,” stated Health Director Dr. Raynard Washington.
The county will provide free testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at various locations throughout the week:
– June 24, 5–9 p.m. – Mad Miles Run Club (300 Camp Rd., Charlotte)
– June 27, 12-3 p.m. – Valerie C. Woodard Center (3205 Freedom Dr., Charlotte)
– June 27, 6-9 p.m. – TCB 54 Hundred Bar (5400 Nevin Rd., Charlotte)
– June 28, 10 p.m.-1 a.m. – Woodshed Bar (3935 Queen City Dr., Charlotte)
Additionally, Mecklenburg County Public Health provides free HIV/STI testing along with PrEP information and referrals at various clinics without requiring appointments. For further details, individuals can contact Mecklenburg County Public Health at 704-432-TEST (8378) or email [email protected].
As of December 31, 2023, there were 7,446 diagnosed cases of people living with HIV in Mecklenburg County. In that year alone, there were 272 new diagnoses reported within the county. Over the past five years, every zip code in the county has seen new cases; however, certain areas and populations continue to experience higher incidence rates. In particular, African Americans accounted for nearly three out of five new cases in 2022.
