The Office of the Tax Collector for Mecklenburg County reported record tax collections for the budget year ending June 30, 2025. The ad valorem tax collection rate reached 99.5%, and property tax collections across all jurisdictions exceeded $2 billion for the first time.
In addition to property taxes, gross receipts or business taxes totaled $180 million, nearly $10 million more than the previous year. The combined total collected by the office amounted to $2,276,619,903.42 from both ad valorem and gross receipts taxes.
Property tax revenue accounted for 57% of last year’s county budget. The Office of the Tax Collector is tasked with administering and collecting both ad valorem and gross receipt taxes as well as handling special assessments throughout Mecklenburg County and its municipalities.
“The hard work by the Office of the Tax Collector to ensure bills are paid in a timely manner is critical to the fiscal health of the County and its ability to provide essential programs and services,” said County Manager Mike Bryant. “The success of our staff in coordinating payments and communicating deadlines shows their dedication to Charlotte-Mecklenburg and to our shared goals of making the community a better place to live, learn, work, and recreate.”
Mecklenburg County collects property taxes based on assessed values determined annually as of January 1. Tax bills are mailed in late summer with payment due September 1; interest does not accrue until early January if unpaid after Jan. 5. The tax office uses several methods to contact taxpayers about overdue amounts.
Business taxes collected include room occupancy tax from hotels or similar establishments; prepared food and beverage tax; vehicle rental/U-Drive-It tax; and heavy equipment tax for businesses renting such equipment at retail.
