Mecklenburg County announced on May 1 that it is supporting water conservation efforts following the implementation of mandatory restrictions by Charlotte Water, which will take effect on May 15.
The county said these measures are important as drought conditions continue in the region. Residents and businesses are being informed about the new rules, which limit non-essential water use such as lawn irrigation, vehicle washing, and other outdoor activities. The county asked everyone to follow guidance from Charlotte Water and regional partners.
In addition to informing the public, Mecklenburg County confirmed it is complying with all water restrictions at Park and Recreation facilities. A burn ban has also been issued for these locations starting May 4 to help reduce fire risk during dry weather. Details about prohibited activities have been made available for review.
The restrictions aim to preserve the community’s water supply by reducing usage during this period of prolonged dry weather. For more information about current water restrictions and conservation tips, residents can visit Charlotte Water’s website.
While local schools may be affected by ongoing drought-related measures, recent data shows enrollment at Mecklenburg County dropped by 0.4% in the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. In total, Mecklenburg County schools enrolled 153,537 students in that same period according to state education records.
