The public is invited to provide feedback on the utilization of federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) block grant funds. LIHEAP offers heating, crisis, and weatherization assistance, and Mecklenburg County’s Department of Community Resources usually runs this program from December to March. The program allows states significant flexibility under block grant funding to create and manage their own programs within certain limitations.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is currently soliciting public comments on the LIHEAP Block Grant Plan. This plan details how federal LIHEAP block grant funds will be allocated in North Carolina for the federal fiscal year 2025-2026. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration of Children and Families has given North Carolina the option to replicate last year’s plan with necessary updates.

The plan will be accessible online from June 23-27, 2025.

A public hearing webinar is scheduled for Monday, June 30, where the Block Grant Plan will be discussed, and any questions or concerns can be addressed. Interested individuals are encouraged to register for the public meeting.

Registrants will receive a confirmation email with information on joining the webinar.

Comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Monday, June 30. Feedback can be emailed to Jasmyne Simmons at [email protected] and Emma Burgy at [email protected].
