The Carolina Panthers have made several changes to their roster, including the release of veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney, 32, had joined the team last March and managed to tie for the team’s highest number of sacks with 5.5 last season. The Rock Hill, South Carolina native was a former No. 1 overall draft pick.
In free agency, the Panthers acquired Patrick Jones II from the Minnesota Vikings. The 26-year-old outside linebacker recorded seven sacks last year with his previous team.
During this year’s draft, the Panthers traded up to select Nic Scourton in the second round and Princely Umanmielen in the third round, adding young talent to their lineup. Scourton is yet to turn 21 before preseason, while Umanmielen recently turned 23.
The team still has various options for outside linebackers on their roster including D.J. Wonnum, DJ Johnson, Amaré Barno, Kenny Dyson, Thomas Incoom, and Boogie Basham.
Clowney’s release was part of several transactions by the Panthers on Thursday. Jonathon Brooks was placed on the physically unable to perform list after tearing his ACL during Week 14 of last season; this will keep him out for the entire 2025 season as he recovers from his second ACL tear in consecutive years.
Colin Granger, who transitioned from basketball to tight end, was waived with an injury settlement. Additionally, defensive tackle Popo Aumavae was waived due to injury prior to final cuts; tight end Jordan Matthews and receiver Dax Milne were released; and receiver T.J. Luther along with offensive lineman Andrew Raym and defensive tackle Jerrod Clark were also waived.
Currently standing at 62 players, these roster adjustments come ahead of rookie minicamp which will include eight drafted rookies and several undrafted rookie free agents awaiting signing.
