CHARLOTTE—The Carolina Panthers are focusing on regrouping after a 40-9 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, which marked their first home loss of the season and the team’s most difficult defensive performance against the run so far this year.

Derrick Brown, reflecting on the loss, said: “You got to go back to work. We got our ass whooped today,” he stated. “I mean, hats off to them. They whooped our ass. So got to go back to work. We sat in this same position four weeks ago.”

Four weeks earlier, the Panthers had suffered a heavy 42-13 loss to the Patriots but managed to respond with three consecutive wins, bringing their record to 4-4.

“We sat here, we had these same questions four weeks ago, like I said, right?” Brown continued. “And you know for us to be able to snap back from that, I mean, coach breaks it up into the quarters, the season in the four quarters, and we just finished our second four games.”

Head coach Dave Canales emphasizes finishing strong in each quarter of play and throughout the season. With two quarters now complete and their record evened out, attention turns toward how they will respond next.

“I mean, back to the drawing board,” said Brown. “We know what we do well. We know what we do good. Now we just got to go out and execute it at a high level once again.”

A key issue identified was defending against Buffalo’s rushing attack. James Cook III ran for 216 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries—a new franchise record for rushing yards allowed by an individual opponent against Carolina.

Asked about what went wrong defensively, Jaycee Horn replied: “Everything.” He added context: “They had over 200 yards rushing,” Horn said. “Whenever that happens, it’s hard to stop—the whole playbook opens, so it’s hard to stop anything. And just playing complementary football, we didn’t do a good job of that today. We couldn’t stop anything, and the offense couldn’t get anything going, and that’s a recipe for disaster.”

Before Sunday’s game, Carolina’s defense had not allowed any rushes longer than six yards over their previous three games; however, Cook broke that streak on his first carry with a twelve-yard gain.

Coach Canales commented on Buffalo’s strategy: “Just explosive play,” he said about Cook’s impact runs—which included seven rushes of ten or more yards—and added: “I thought James Cook did an excellent job of being patient… There were some cutbacks that got out got out on us, and the toss cracks really were effective for them today… this is a copycat league… So we got to go back to the drawing board and make sure we’re fitting all those up correctly.”

Horn echoed concerns about perimeter defense: “Team’s been hitting us with perimeter runs, and they’ve been successful, so got to find a way to stop it.”

Bobby Brown III summarized where things broke down for Carolina’s defense: “Simply put, everything,” he responded regarding stopping Cook’s performance. “We didn’t do what we needed to do game plan-wise, plan-wise, effort-wise; we just didn’t play better football.”

Despite disappointment in both outcome and execution among players after Sunday’s loss at Bank of America Stadium—where frustration was evident—there remains confidence within the locker room based on prior comebacks this season.

“We were just able to come in calm down and execute,” Derrick Brown explained about how they rebounded previously. Looking ahead he added: “Nobody gave us a chance then… we’re back to square one… we’ll be back here… so I mean it’s one of those things where this is how it happened so we got humbled today.

“Humility is definitely a measuring stick for us today so we’ll take this one on the chin and get back to it.”
