Jalen Coker, a second-year receiver for the Carolina Panthers, has gradually returned to the team’s offense after missing the first six weeks of the season due to a quad injury. In his initial games back, Coker was eased into play with limited targets as coaches aimed not to overexert him.
Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik said, “The first couple of weeks, we were trying to make sure that we’re taking care of him and not overstraining him with reps. But he looks great. He did a great job on a scramble reaction last week.”
Head coach Dave Canales emphasized the importance of involving Coker more in upcoming games: “I’m expecting a big game from Jalen Coker at some point coming up, you know, as he continues to show what he’s doing out there. He looked great again.” Canales later added, “I got to do a better job, Brad and I, just getting Jalen going. There wasn’t a lot of passes to go around last week. We had, I think, 20 passes on the day or something like that. But Jalen made the plays when we needed him.”
Idzik highlighted Coker’s contributions beyond receiving: “He’s been playing really physical in the run game. Love to reward guys for doing that,” Idzik said. He added that while other receivers are also making plays, efforts are being made to ensure each player remains involved and defenses stay off balance.
“Jalen’s just a phenomenal receiver. Usually when the ball goes his way, he catches it,” Idzik stated. “He’s just been consistent that way. He finds ways to win… There are some of these underneath routes at times… I try to pride ourselves on making sure those guys are running every route to win…”
The Panthers will face New Orleans this Sunday; their passing defense is allowing an average of 203.9 yards per game.
On defense, Tershawn Wharton has returned from injury and is complementing Derrick Brown on the defensive line. Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero noted their contrasting physical profiles but praised their combined effectiveness: “One guy that’s twitchy and a penetrator, Derrick’s very twitchy as well, but he’s got that size and mass… they’re a really good complement.” Evero also commented on Brown’s endurance: “Since probably our first year with him in 2023… there’s just no plays where he takes off… it’s so impressive… that a guy that size could play with that stamina.”
Last week against Green Bay saw Wharton record seven tackles and significant defensive contributions as his workload increased.
Special teams preparation has shifted following New Orleans’ trade of Rashid Shaheed—formerly both their second-leading receiver and primary punt returner—to Seattle earlier this week. Special teams coordinator Tracy Smith described adjusting strategy given uncertainty about who would fill Shaheed’s role: “I have to take a look at the other candidates to return out there… There’s a little more uncertainty now…”
Smith continued: “It leads to some questions about the particular style that they’ll play based on who they have out there… So I have to have a little more openness to future activities.”
