The Carolina Panthers have finalized their initial 53-man roster for the upcoming NFL season, with several notable decisions shaping the team’s depth and composition.

Veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen remains on the roster despite recent trade speculation. Hunter Renfrow, a former Clemson standout, was released as part of Tuesday’s moves to reach the 53-player limit. The decision reflects the team’s depth at wide receiver, which includes Thielen and six others: Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, Jalen Coker, Brycen Tremayne, David Moore, and Jimmy Horn Jr.

“Cutting Renfrow was difficult after a strong training camp, as he returned from a year out of the league following a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. But this group is talented and deep, and with the emergence of Tremayne as a big target and big contributor on special teams, someone had to go. Since he’s a vested veteran, he doesn’t have to pass through waivers and can sign to the practice squad if he chooses.”

Renfrow could still join the Panthers’ practice squad or wait for other opportunities as further roster changes are expected in coming days.

All eight players selected by Carolina in this year’s draft made the team. Three undrafted rookies—linebacker Bam Martin-Scott, cornerback Corey Thornton, and kicker Ryan Fitzgerald—also secured spots on the active roster.

At quarterback, Bryce Young and Andy Dalton were retained. Running backs Chuba Hubbard, Rico Dowdle, and Trevor Etienne round out that position group; Etienne is expected to contribute significantly on returns.

Tight end depth includes Ja’Tavion Sanders, Tommy Tremble (recently cleared from back surgery), Mitchell Evans, and James Mitchell.

The offensive line is considered one of the deepest units on the team. It features starters Ikem Ekwonu (LT), Damien Lewis (LG), Austin Corbett (C), Robert Hunt (RG), Taylor Moton (RT), along with reserves Brady Christensen, Yosh Nijman, Cade Mays, and Chandler Zavala. This depth aligns with organizational priorities focused on protecting quarterbacks and establishing an effective running game.

On defense, Derrick Brown leads a defensive line group that also includes A’Shawn Robinson and Tershawn Wharton. With LaBryan Ray moving to injured reserve but eligible for return after four weeks under league rules (https://operations.nfl.com/updates/the-players/the-nfl-s-injured-reserve-rules/), Cam Jackson and Jaden Crumedy remain for added depth.

Six outside linebackers made the cut: Patrick Jones II; DJ Wonnum; rookies Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen; Thomas Incoom; and DJ Johnson. Inside linebacker numbers are lower with just four: Christian Rozeboom; Trevin Wallace; Claudin Cherelus; Bam Martin-Scott.

In secondary positions: Jaycee Horn headlines five cornerbacks joined by Mike Jackson; Chau Smith-Wade; Corey Thornton; Akayleb Evans. Four safeties include Tre’von Moehrig—described as a defensive tone-setter—Nick Scott (core special teamer); Lathan Ransom; Demani Richardson.

Special teams will feature kicker Ryan Fitzgerald—though head coach Dave Canales has indicated they will continue evaluating options around the league until opening day—punter Sam Martin and long snapper JJ Jansen.

“This is the group, until it isn’t,” according to comments about special teams decisions. “The Panthers have said they’ll look at all the available kickers around the league so until Fitzgerald lines up for the opening kickoff… it’s probably safest not to make too many assumptions.”

With final cuts complete ahead of next week’s season opener in Jacksonville against the Jaguars (https://www.panthers.com/schedule/), further adjustments remain possible as other NFL teams announce their own rosters or release players who may fit Carolina’s needs.
