The Carolina Panthers defense is aiming to move past a disappointing start after a 26-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in their season opener. Players and coaches stressed that the result should not define expectations for the rest of the year.
Cornerback Jaycee Horn addressed concerns about recurring struggles for the team, noting that it is early in the season. “Just a bad day,” Horn said. “I feel like, as a defense, we started slow…Just starting faster, I feel like as a defense we would have been good if we did that.” He added, “It’s Week 1, you know what I’m saying? I know it feels like just because we’ve been through it the past couple of years, it’s like the end of the world, but it’s Week 1.”
The Panthers’ defense allowed 378 total yards—200 of them on the ground—and gave up 19 first downs to Jacksonville. Head coach Dave Canales cited poor tackling as one issue. Outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum echoed those concerns: “A tackle is a want to,” said Wonnum. “That’s not nothing, you, it’s not something, not schematic or anything. You just got to go tackle. We’re football players and we’ve been playing tackle since we were in high school, middle school, so we got to come ready to go.”
Wonnum also mentioned communication issues among defenders, with several new starters and rookies seeing significant playing time: “We’ve got to continue playing together, continue communicating a little better. I feel like that was an issue today, but now that we get those things better, we’re good to go,” he said.
One key play in the game came when Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence connected with tight end Hunter Long for a six-yard touchdown pass following an interception by Bryce Young. Safety Nick Scott described it as difficult to defend: “That’s a tough look,” said Scott. “…You have to have damn near the perfect call, and your flat player has to know it’s coming… Guys play hard… sometimes stuff gets past you.”
Turnovers played a significant role; Jacksonville scored 10 points off Panthers turnovers including two from quarterback Bryce Young—a deflected interception and a fumble on a scramble. Horn acknowledged room for improvement: “I feel like we’ve got to be better in sudden change situations, to be able to put out the fire to help the team out a little bit…”
Canales noted how mistakes on both sides of the ball contributed: “We turned the ball over four times… When you give an offense that has talent… more opportunities, then we start to expose ourselves… that’s part of playing complementary football…”
Players are focused on correcting errors before their next game against Arizona. Horn emphasized staying unified: “That’s the message I was echoing on the sideline like it’s week one…” He continued: “…we just got to worry about us, stay together as a team because we go out there and win next week…”
Scott urged teammates not to let past seasons influence this year’s outlook: “I was just telling guys like Jaycee and our other leaders that where this will get dangerous is if guys start blending what happened last year or the year before with this year…” He added optimism for improvement: “…everybody in this locker room cares so much… We have to be better in our communication, defense has to tackle better…”
Despite disappointment over their performance against Jacksonville, Scott remains confident: “We’re just disappointed because we know we’re better than that… It was totally different to me… we’re excited about it… we just have to put it together.”
