Every defender on the Carolina Panthers preparing to face Kyler Murray has a story about the Arizona Cardinals quarterback’s ability to escape pressure and make plays with his legs. The team is focusing on a collective approach as they prepare for their upcoming matchup.

Outside linebacker Patrick Jones II recalled a moment from last season when he nearly sacked Murray, only for the quarterback to slip away. “He ducked underneath me, and it was just one of those things like bro, he’s so elusive,” Jones said. “He goes one way in the pocket, then he bounces out the other way.” Although Murray was eventually tackled behind the line and threw an interception on the next play, Jones described him as “like a magician back there.”

Other Panthers defenders have similar experiences. A’Shawn Robinson and Christian Rozeboom faced Murray several times while playing in the NFC West. Robinson noted Murray’s ability to evade pressure: “He’s a great quarterback,” Robinson said. “He does well to evade pressure, has a sense for getting out of that and escaping that, and still getting the ball down the field, so just got to be on our stuff and communicate everything we’re doing up front and have everything down.”

D.J. Wonnum shared his own encounters with Murray: “I think it was my second or third year. I actually did have him. I think I got him with a finger or something,” Wonnum said. He added that last year he managed to grab Murray’s jersey at the end of a game: “I grabbed his jersey like just enough, and he spun out and fell down.”

Cornerback Jaycee Horn highlighted how challenging it is to defend against such a dynamic player: “Whenever you see a dynamic QB like him that has a good arm, makes the throws, and probably one of the fastest people on the field, you know, it’s tough times for a defense,” Horn said.

Panthers defenders emphasized that bringing down Murray requires coordinated effort from all players rushing together rather than individually. “It’s really just about rushing not as four individuals but as one, and I feel like when we all come together and rush in the unit, y’all going to see what we could do…he’s very gifted, so it’s going to take all rushing as one for sure,” Jones explained.

The defensive strategy involves keeping eyes on Murray throughout each play because he can extend plays both inside and outside of the pocket. Horn stressed that coverage must remain tight until Murray crosses the line of scrimmage: “When (Murray) passes the line of scrimmage…we never leave our work until he become a true runner.”

Robinson summed up his approach by focusing on individual assignments within team defense: “I got to do my job,” Robinson said. “If I don’t defeat the man in front of me…I’m never going to get there anyway.”

Rozeboom pointed out that containing Murray requires discipline across all defensive positions: “It’s a lot about rush integrity…And so it’s all of us on board every time.” He added that swarming is essential since “he’s going to make some guys miss.”

Wonnum concluded by noting how crucial it will be for defenders not only to contain but also direct where they want Murray to go: “Just his ability to get out of the pocket…his athleticism…this week we’ve got to do our best to kind of keep him in one area or flush [him] to where we want him to go.”
