The summer list season has brought attention to some notable figures in the history of the Carolina Panthers. ESPN analyst Ben Solak undertook the task of identifying the greatest NFL players from each draft slot since 1967, using the modern format of 262 picks.
Solak’s analysis included four players drafted by the Panthers: Josh Norman (No. 143 in 2012), Chad Cota (No. 209 in 1995), Captain Munnerlyn (No. 216 in 2009), and Will Montgomery (No. 234 in 2006). These selections highlight former GM Marty Hurney’s ability to find talent beyond the first round.
Additionally, two players who spent time with the Panthers but were not drafted by them also made Solak’s list: Hall of Famer Kevin Greene (No. 113 by the Rams in 1985) and soon-to-be Hall of Famer Jared Allen (No. 126 by the Chiefs in 2004).
Several other players with connections to the Panthers were mentioned, including Ray Brown, Jessie Armstead, and Shawn Jefferson, though they were recognized for roles beyond their playing careers.
Some high-profile Panthers missed out on top honors due to strong competition at their respective draft slots. Julius Peppers was noted among top No. 2 picks but lost out to Lawrence Taylor. Other Hall of Honor members like Jordan Gross, Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad, Mike McCormack, and Wesley Walls faced similar outcomes against formidable opponents.
Recent legends such as Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, and Greg Olsen also found themselves edged out by prominent names like Peyton Manning and JJ Watt.
Particularly noteworthy are Ryan Kalil and Jon Beason from the same draft class in 2007; both were snubbed despite impressive credentials compared to those selected at their positions.
The discussion around these rankings offers a chance for fans to reflect on past drafts while preparing for upcoming celebrations.
