CHARLOTTE — As the NFL training camp approaches, several Carolina Panthers players have been recognized in ESPN’s survey of top players at each position. Conducted by Jeremy Fowler, the poll involved league coaches and executives.
Jaycee Horn was ranked seventh among cornerbacks after his first Pro Bowl season. Some ballots placed him as high as third, reflecting his peers’ respect. The Panthers extended his contract for four years at $100 million this offseason.
Other Panthers were mentioned in their respective positions, though not in the top 10. Defensive tackle Derrick Brown and guard Robert Hunt received honorable mentions, along with safety Tre’von Moehrig, who joined from the Raiders as a free agent.
Brown played only one game last season due to a torn meniscus but previously set a record for tackles by a defensive lineman (103) and earned a Pro Bowl spot. An NFC executive commented on Brown’s skills: “When he’s healthy, he’s near the top. Elite run stopper with some pass-rush upside.”
Hunt, who also made his first Pro Bowl after joining as a free agent last year, was praised for his run game abilities. A veteran NFL personnel man said: “Absolute mauler. Better than you think. Downhill, gap scheme, two-back style of run game. As a pass protector, above-average big man, good hands.”
Moehrig was highlighted for his potential impact on run defense in Carolina’s secondary. An NFL coordinator noted: “Really productive last year. Better closer to the box. Took advantage of blitzing ability.”
Running back Chuba Hubbard also received votes following a career season amid a resurgence at his position.
