Now that July has arrived, the focus shifts to training camp and the start of the 2025 NFL season. It’s an opportune moment to review what the Carolina Panthers’ opponents have done in the offseason to impact this year’s games.
One of these opponents is the New York Jets, whom the Panthers will face in Week 7 on October 19 at 1 p.m. Historically, the Panthers lead their series against the Jets with a record of 5-3. The last regular-season meeting between these teams was in 2021 when Carolina secured a 19-14 victory in Charlotte.
In 2024, the Jets had a challenging season with a record of 5-12. Their offense ranked 24th, while their defense stood strong at third place.
The Jets made significant personnel changes this offseason. Key free-agent acquisitions include quarterback Justin Fields, cornerback Brandon Stephens, wide receivers Tyler Johnson and Josh Reynolds, and several others across various positions. They also extended linebacker Jamien Sherwood’s contract.
The team experienced notable departures as well. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receivers Davante Adams and Mike Williams left, among others. Despite these changes, Garrett Wilson remains a key player on offense.
On defense, despite losing veterans like C.J. Mosley and Hasson Reddick due to injuries or contract disputes last year, they retained their leading tackler from 2024 by extending Sherwood’s contract.
Off-field changes were also prominent for the Jets. Aaron Glenn was appointed as head coach and brought Tanner Engstrand from Detroit as offensive coordinator. Steve Wilks joined as defensive coordinator while Darren Mougey took over as general manager.
As for what lies ahead in 2025: whether Justin Fields can solve the team’s long-standing quarterback issues remains uncertain; his connection with key players such as Wilson will be crucial under Engstrand’s guidance. Meanwhile defensively speaking – given Glenn’s reputation – expectations are high for continued success this season.
