The Carolina Panthers’ defense reflected on their recent 27-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, a game that sets up a decisive NFC South matchup against Tampa Bay next week. While the defeat was clear, players and coaches highlighted both areas for improvement and positive aspects of their performance.

“You’re right,” said defensive captain Derrick Brown. “Ain’t no such thing as a moral victory. That’s sick trash. We lost.”

Head coach Dave Canales credited the defense for providing opportunities: “I just got to talk about our defense and the amazing game they played to give us opportunities offensively. We didn’t do anything with those.”

Seattle scored three touchdowns in the second half, each time starting their drives within Panthers territory due to turnovers or failed fourth-down attempts by Carolina’s offense. On drives where Seattle started on their own side of the field, the Panthers’ defense limited them to two field goals, forced two punts, caused a turnover on downs, a fumble, and an interception.

Mike Jackson intercepted Sam Darnold in the end zone for one of those key stops against his former team. “They tried the slow ball. I felt it coming,” Jackson said after the game. “I just went and got it, and it was kind of running all the way down the sidelines, kind of like look at me now… A lot of them people used to laugh at me… now you got to look at me.”

Safety Nick Scott emphasized accountability: “Everybody’s going to look at how we got down there, but if you want to be a great defensive team, no matter where you start on the field, you’ve got to at least force them to field goals… So we just got to be better in that area.”

The Panthers were able to limit Seattle’s explosive passing plays—an area where they had struggled previously—despite facing one of the league’s most productive deep-ball offenses led by Darnold and receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

“That just comes down to communication and people having the correct leverage,” explained Scott regarding limiting big plays through effective teamwork.

Cornerback Jaycee Horn added: “I think we did a solid job in the first half… really all day limiting the explosive pass game… But I think we did a solid job. We gave up a little bit in the second half… We didn’t get the job done…”

Carolina pressured Darnold throughout much of Sunday’s contest with four quarterback hurries and three sacks from Tre’von Moehrig, Nic Scourton, and D.J. Wonnum; however, most came early when it was still tied 3-3.

Brown noted adjustments are needed moving forward: “Every single week is a new week scheme-wise… he did a good job today… unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to get after much in that second half…”

Two areas proved costly for Carolina: allowing over 100 rushing yards from Zach Charbonnet (18 carries) plus another 51 from Kenneth Walker (15 carries), along with five runs exceeding ten yards; also significant was Horn’s face mask penalty on third-and-long early in Q4 which extended what became a scoring drive for Seattle.

Horn took responsibility: “My hands were too high… as soon as I hit his face mask I tried to let go… A bad play on me…”

Looking ahead toward next week’s crucial rematch with Tampa Bay—a team they’ve faced recently—the Panthers will try building upon defensive positives while addressing lapses identified against Seattle.

“We know who we are on defense,” said Jackson. “We played good but we still let some plays get away from us… that’s kind of how playoff games go so it’s just like we got to be ready…”

The Carolina Panthers operate as an NFL franchise based in Charlotte since being established as its 29th team in October 1993 (official website). The organization offers professional football experiences including home games at Bank of America Stadium (official website).
