The Carolina Panthers have concluded their first week of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), marking the beginning of a new phase in their preparation for the upcoming season. Despite the limited nature of these early practices, several developments have emerged that could shape the team’s future.

Among the highlights is the performance of young defensive backs Chau Smith-Wade and Demani Richardson, who both made interceptions during practice sessions. This is seen as a positive sign for a team that struggled with depth last year, particularly on defense. “This is really cool because, from the first time we got Chau out here, and this is speaking about Demani Richardson as well,” said an observer. The players’ commitment to preparation and technique has been noted as contributing factors to their success.

Rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan has also been making an impression. As the No. 8 overall pick, McMillan has been actively involved in practice sessions, showing promise as both a downfield target and quick option for quarterback Bryce Young. His ability to catch with his hands rather than his body has stood out during these early practices.

Injury news came with tight end Tommy Tremble undergoing back surgery, which will sideline him temporarily. This absence provides additional opportunities for second-year player Ja’Tavion Sanders and rookie Mitchell Evans to gain valuable practice reps.

The competitive atmosphere within the team has been highlighted by coaches Canales and Dan Morgan’s emphasis on raising competition levels across all areas. This approach was evident when McMillan faced off against Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn during one of the practice sessions.

Additionally, safety Tre’von Moehrig’s presence in free agency was strategic due to his versatility on defense. “He’s a lot to handle from a receiver standpoint and tight end standpoint if you’re trying to block him,” Canales commented on Moehrig’s impact during practices.

Overall, while it’s still early days in terms of evaluating performance potential fully, these initial observations provide insight into how new additions are integrating into the Panthers’ roster ahead of next season.
