Tetairoa McMillan and Xavier Legette were key contributors in the Carolina Panthers’ 30-27 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, with both receivers celebrating a pivotal touchdown by riding imaginary horses back to the sideline. The celebration was inspired by receivers coach Rob Moore, who encouraged his players to support each other’s successes.
McMillan emphasized the importance of teamwork among the receiving corps: “Coach Moore harped this whole week about celebrating each other’s victories,” he said. “And if you look, if you turn the tape on, I feel like the receiver room, we played a big part in that today, whether it was me, Jalen Coker, the tight ends, or XL.”
Quarterback Bryce Young distributed passes to nine different players during the game. Five of those pass catchers gained more than 50 yards each. Both McMillan and Legette scored touchdowns, while Jalen Coker secured a crucial two-point conversion late in regulation.
Coker described his role in that play: “I think everyone’s an option when we call a pass play, but, with the coverage they were giving us, I was able to create quick separation,” he said. “And Bryce, being just hawk vision, he is able to see me and kind of put a nice ball right there for me.”
Young set a franchise record for passing yards in a single game with 448 yards. McMillan had eight receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns despite seeing less defensive attention than earlier in the season as other receivers became more involved.
“Shoot, honestly, I think we were executing all cylinders, every receiver was going off, just kind of expanding the offense and opening up holes for us. And so I wouldn’t be able to do it by myself at all,” McMillan stated.
He added: “I mean that’s big, our guys, the tight end room, the running backs, and especially our receivers coming in and making plays…it only makes my job easier, makes Bryce’s job easier and make the play caller’s job easier just so that they can rely on any player on the offense.”
The Panthers shifted their offensive approach after struggling against New Orleans’ defense in Week 10. Against Atlanta—who had previously not allowed more than 221 passing yards in any game this season—the team focused on vertical passing from early on.
Jalen Coker reflected on his performance: “I don’t really think about it like that,” he said after catching four passes for 52 yards. “I go out there and I play and I do my best every time I step on the field…If it comes to me, it comes to me…”
Looking ahead to their next matchup against San Francisco on Monday Night Football after an extra day of preparation due to scheduling timing adjustments (https://www.nfl.com/schedules/monday-night-football/), head coach Dave Canales pointed out improvements seen both during practice sessions and finally realized during Sunday’s win.
“It really is about the guys and the work that they’ve been putting in…I’m seeing the improvement in practice. I’m seeing the chemistry happen…today we found great rhythm,” Canales said.
He continued: “It’s not always pretty…but the offensive line did an admirable job of giving Bryce time…It just takes a couple of plays…the guys feel juice and confidence…”
Canales concluded by emphasizing consistent preparation: “I’m not always going to call a perfect play…there’s five eligibles most of the time; find a completion; find a win; and guys found wins in different ways…for me it’s it gives me a chance to just circle back around and double down on focus that every game needs to be approached with this kind of care…”
