The Carolina Panthers began their regular season with a 26-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Jacksonville, Florida. The game was marked by offensive mistakes and missed opportunities for the Panthers, who had aimed to continue building on progress made late last season.
Quarterback Bryce Young struggled in the first half, throwing an interception and losing a fumble. These turnovers led directly to 10 points for the Jaguars. Early in the second half, a drive that reached the red zone ended with an incomplete fourth-and-1 pass attempt, resulting in visible frustration from Young on the sidelines.
Other issues included dropped passes, penalties such as an ineligible man downfield call on center Austin Corbett that negated a first down, and errant snaps that disrupted timing. Defensive lapses also contributed to the loss, including missed tackles and apparent communication breakdowns.
The Panthers’ only points for most of the game came from a 48-yard field goal by rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald. In the final five minutes, Young connected with Chuba Hubbard for a touchdown pass, but it was not enough to affect the outcome.
A lengthy weather delay of 76 minutes due to lightning interrupted play during the first half. After play resumed, Jacksonville’s Travis Etienne broke free for a 71-yard run following a missed tackle by safety Nick. The Jaguars scored again soon after and added another field goal before halftime.
Defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton made his debut for Carolina but left early due to injury concerns. Initially evaluated for a concussion and cleared to return, he was later ruled out before halftime because of a hamstring injury. Wharton had been one of five key defensive additions signed during free agency.
The defeat leaves Carolina facing questions about execution on both sides of the ball just one week into the season.
