The Carolina Panthers practiced Thursday without left tackle Ikem Ekwonu and cornerback Damarri Mathis as they prepare for their season opener against Jacksonville. Ekwonu, who recently had an appendectomy, did not participate but worked on the side during practice. Head coach Dave Canales said that Friday will be a key day to determine if Ekwonu can return.
Mathis was held out due to a knee injury after being listed as limited on Wednesday.
Other players dealing with injuries include left guard Damien Lewis (shoulder/ankle) and right guard Robert Hunt (foot), both of whom were limited for the second consecutive day. Defensive end A’Shawn Robinson was added to the injury report as a limited participant because of a groin issue.

“Friday would be the key day to see if he can return,” head coach Dave Canales said about Ekwonu.
