The Carolina Panthers concluded their mandatory minicamp on Thursday, marking the end of their on-field activities until training camp begins in five weeks. Head coach Dave Canales emphasized the importance of maintaining fitness during this break. “The biggest thing that they have to realize is your vacation was after the season,” Canales said. He urged players to keep up with their training and avoid relying solely on camp to get into shape.
Canales also praised the maturity shown by the rookie class and encouraged all players to work with strength and wellness staff to ensure readiness for training camp. He suggested that players take advantage of time off but maintain a consistent workout routine.
During practice, offensive linemen Ikem Ekwonu and Robert Hunt engaged in a friendly race off the field, showcasing Ekwonu’s athleticism. In another highlight, cornerback Mike Jackson made an impressive interception return, underscoring his value alongside Jaycee Horn in the secondary.
Wide receiver Hunter Renfrow demonstrated his skills during team drills, impressing both coaches and teammates with his ability to create space against defenders. “Every day you see him shine in different ways,” Canales noted about Renfrow’s performance.
A group of rookies who played together at Florida, including Princely Umanmielen and Trevor Etienne, have found camaraderie as they transition into professional football. Their shared history has helped them integrate into the team more easily.
The competition for wide receiver positions remains intense with several players vying for limited spots on the roster. Canales acknowledged that special teams contributions could be decisive in these decisions: “If it’s even, the special teamer makes the team.”
Extra points from practice included minor scuffles between players as tensions ran high after an extended period together. Several key players were held out of practice for precautionary reasons or excused from participation altogether.
