The Carolina Panthers signed Patrick Jones II for his prowess in sacking quarterbacks and pressuring the pocket. On Thursday, he demonstrated another skill by intercepting a pass from quarterback Bryce Young. Jones showcased his ability to drop back into coverage, making an impressive catch that caught the attention of head coach Dave Canales.

“It was just great vision,” Canales remarked. “Quarterback intentions, he’s in that bonus hook area like he does, and he kind of dropped back, got to his spot, and got vision on the quarterback.” Canales praised Jones for executing a veteran play that others could learn from.

Despite tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders stripping the ball away at the end, the defense celebrated Jones’s effort. The interception highlighted what the Panthers hope to see more of from Jones this season.

Last year with the Vikings, Jones recorded 7.0 sacks, a forced fumble, 12 quarterback hits, and nine tackles for loss. His strength is notable; he can squat 675 pounds. The Panthers were eager to sign him on the first day of free agency.

Jones has also taken an active role in mentoring draft picks Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. Canales emphasized their focus on effort and physicality when discussing what stood out about Jones: “Effort, strain… we preach rolling off the ball… transitioning to your pass rush.”

Canales described Jones as a valuable addition to their team: “And so a great addition, a great pro.”
