Mecklenburg County Public Health is providing guidance to residents following a new state law that permits the rental of residential swimming pools through sharing economy platforms without needing a public swimming pool permit. The law, G.S. 130A-280, took effect on July 1.
Homeowners who wish to rent out their pools must adhere to six safety standards. These include maintaining water chemical levels, ensuring proper signage around the pool area, and having life-saving equipment like reaching poles and life rings available. Additionally, pools must be secured with fencing or barriers to prevent unsupervised access, have properly fitted submerged suction covers, and feature nonslip surfaces on the pool deck.
Public Health is not tasked with enforcing these safety recommendations but continues its role in permitting and evaluating public swimming pools within Mecklenburg County to maintain health and safety standards for residents. Residential pool owners are required to comply with state law requirements to be exempt from obtaining a public pool permit.
