The Carolina Panthers were defeated by the New Orleans Saints 17-7 at Bank of America Stadium, bringing their record to 5-5 for the season. The Panthers began the game with a strong opening drive, which included a 5-yard touchdown run by Rico Dowdle. However, after this initial success, the team struggled to maintain momentum.

The Saints focused on limiting Dowdle’s effectiveness, holding him to 53 yards on 18 carries. Without significant production from their running game, the Panthers’ offense was unable to establish a consistent rhythm.

Quarterback Bryce Young completed 17 of his 25 passes for 124 yards but also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Following their first scoring drive, the Panthers managed only one first down over their next five possessions and went three-and-out four times in a row.

Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough made key plays that helped keep his team competitive. Notably, he completed long passes of 62 and 52 yards, including a touchdown pass to Chris Olave. On that play, cornerback Jaycee Horn fell during coverage and later argued unsuccessfully for offensive pass interference.

Mistakes hindered any chance for the Panthers to regain control. A blocked field goal attempt by Ryan Fitzgerald bounced forward after hitting Ikem Ekwonu’s helmet but did not lead to points as a fumbled handoff from Young to Jimmy Horn Jr. soon gave possession back to New Orleans.

Despite some defensive highlights—such as Nic Scourton’s sack on fourth down—the offense could not capitalize; Young was intercepted two plays later by Alontae Taylor.

Injuries further impacted Carolina’s performance with Trevin Wallace leaving due to a shoulder injury and Princely Umanmielen exiting intermittently because of a groin issue.

After last week’s victory against Green Bay, expectations were higher for Carolina going into Sunday’s matchup against New Orleans (now with a record of 2-8). The loss reflects ongoing challenges for the Panthers in maintaining consistency throughout games.
