Today, Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina expressed his stance on the recent Senate reconciliation vote. He emphasized his commitment to acting in the best interest of North Carolina, even if it means opposing his party’s leadership.

Senator Tillis stated, “I will always do what is in the best interest of North Carolina, even when that puts me at odds with my own party.” He highlighted his efforts to thoroughly assess the bill’s potential impact on North Carolinians before reaching a decision.

The senator expressed concerns about the bill’s implications for state funding. “I did my homework on behalf of North Carolinians, and I cannot support this bill in its current form,” he said. According to Tillis, the legislation could lead to significant financial losses for North Carolina, affecting hospitals and rural areas. This may result in difficult choices such as cutting Medicaid coverage for many residents.

Tillis urged a return to the House’s approach on Medicaid, which includes reforms targeting waste and fraud while implementing work requirements for certain adults. “We can and must do better than this,” he asserted.

Despite his opposition to parts of the bill, Tillis acknowledged positive aspects like extending tax cuts and increasing border security funding. “There is a lot for North Carolinians to love about the rest of the One Big Beautiful Bill,” he noted.

He concluded by emphasizing that these goals should be achieved without compromising healthcare access or impacting rural communities adversely.
