Charlotte FC faced a disappointing finish in their match against Sporting Kansas City, despite controlling most of the game. The team created several scoring opportunities and achieved nearly three expected goals by the 90th minute, but only managed to score once. Sporting KC capitalized on late chances, securing a 2-1 victory with goals in the 93rd and 96th minutes.
During the first half, both teams found space to attack. Charlotte appeared more threatening and had multiple opportunities, while Sporting KC had some half chances but failed to challenge Kristijan Kahlina in goal. Charlotte took the lead in the 35th minute through Idan Toklomati’s back-heel finish after a build-up involving Eryk Williamson, Wilfried Zaha, and Souleyman Doumbia.
For much of the match until stoppage time, Charlotte remained dominant. Although Sporting KC posed a threat, they did not seem likely to equalize. Charlotte missed several chances to extend their lead during a ten-minute period around the 80th minute when Liel Abada, Kerwin Vargas, and Pep Biel all failed to convert their opportunities. Dean Smith made substitutions to maintain control as Sporting KC increased pressure.
However, two late goals from looping balls over Charlotte’s defense led to Sporting KC’s win. This marked a challenging end for Charlotte FC’s final road trip out West this season. Their next match is against Chicago.
