Raleigh – North Carolina state Sen. Vickie Sawyer, R-Iredell County, disputed a news report that funding intended for college scholarships supporting the children of veterans wounded or killed in action is being held up due to budget disputes.
“North Carolina combat veterans are being told that their children’s college scholarships are in jeopardy because of the budget fight. That is NOT TRUE (emphasis original),” Sawyer said in a Facebook post.
In the post, Sawyer provides a link to a WBTV Channel 3 story about the issue. It says that the funding has been held up because of a budget dispute between the Republican Assembly and the Democratic governor.
However, emails show that the department had not fully spent its allotted funds for this fiscal year and that it had money to support “this semester’s scholarships without a finalized budget.”
“Please let me know if this happened to your family and I will work to fix the problem,” Sawyer said in her Dec. 3 post.
