The namesake of former Charlotte Gov. Cameron A. Morrison will be removed from a Charlotte library, severing ties to white supremacists and aligning with goals to improving equality, inclusion and diversity.
The name change was recommended because of Morrison's racist past, including as a leader of the militant Democratic Party group the "Red Shirts," which kept Black voters from getting to polls.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library said the building's new name will be the SouthPark Regional Library, WBTV 3 reported in October.
"Systemic racism and inequity have no place in public libraries other than as recorded history to remind us how we got to this moment in time," Charlotte Mecklenburg Library CEO Lee Keesler said, WBTV reported. "As a trusted institution, we are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone in our community."
The signage at the library will be taken down and updated over the next several months.
