Those driving or walking around Charlotte, North Carolina, Monday may have noticed a different type of transportation on the walkways: the micro-mobility scooter.
It’s a complex name for a simple device. Helbiz has modified the traditional two-wheeled scooter so it can be attached to wheelchairs, creating a hybrid way for people with limited walking abilities to get around, according to a WBTV report.
“A lot of people cannot get on a two-wheel scooter,” Helbiz’s Tyler Wilson said in the report. “So, it’s really nice to bring another form of transportation for all, thus the wheelchair and the three-wheel sit-down scooter.”
The business is run off the principle of letting people use their smart phones to find a modified scooter, book it and use it to motor around Charlotte, WBTV reported. Charlotte will be the first city to use the micro-mobility devices.
The wheelchair attachments and three-wheeled sit-down scooters are available by calling or texting (888) 974-9074.
Users will be trained on how to charge and use the vehicles and can use the vehicles for a week at a time, free of charge, according to the report. They will also be free to unlock throughout the month of May.
The scooters hit the streets May 2, WBTV reported.
