Tenants received the green light to move into a renovated apartment complex in Charolette that is intended as a step toward helping the homeless.

Roof Above, a Charlotte-based group working to end homelessness in the city, recently announced the complex on Clanton Road was open, and people who have been experiencing chronic homelessness started to move in, including many from the North End encampment for the homeless.

“This opening comes with our deepest appreciation to everyone who accepted the challenge to dream big and meet the moment to make this new apartment community possible,” Liz Clasen-Kelly, chief executive officer of Roof Above, said in a WBTV report

The complex, called The Rise on Clanton, is the city's first adaptive reuse, part of a permanent supportive housing solution plan. Roof Above began renovating a hotel in May 2021, converting the space into apartments, which include kitchens and space for on-site support services.

“We hold to the vision that everyone is worthy of the safety, stability and dignity of a home,” Clasen-Kelly said. “Together, and one life at a time, we end homelessness.”

Tenants will be chosen primarily through the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Coordinated Entry process that will require an assessment to help identify the most vulnerable people in need of permanent housing.

Roof Above provides about 700 supportive housing units within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Despite Roof Above's efforts, there are still more than 400 people in Mecklenburg County experiencing chronic homelessness, the WBTV report said.
