Local Charlotte animal shelters are brimming with pets that need homes.

Now, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care & Control unit is partnering with Pets for the Elderly to help find owners. Specifically, they’re looking for people to take in rabbits.

“At 12:00 p.m. today, we ‘de-hared’ a state of emergency, as we do not have enough cages to house all of these cottontails, so we are putting Operation Bunny Hop into effect,” Melissa Knicely of the CMPD Animal Care and Control unit told WBTV News. “We need these bunnies to hop into homes as quickly as possible.”

One cause for the crisis is that a woman recently lost her home, and in turn, had to give up 30 rabbits. They are all sociable and in good health, according to the shelter.

The shelter already had six bunnies, and it has capacity for only about 10 total, so it needs to shift into high gear to find homes for the influx of rabbits. They come in all colors and appear to have been well cared for prior to arriving at the shelter.

For people interested in adopting the bunnies, adoption fees will be waived, but prospective owners can expect to wait for a health check to be completed before the adoption goes through.
