North Carolina’s Queen City will be losing one of its oldest live theater companies as the Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte is shuttering its doors at the end of October.
"Despite our best efforts, we are heartbroken that we have to bring down the curtain on such a rich history of professional theatre here,” Laura Rice, executive director of the group, told WCNC.
Actor's Theatre is the region's only professional theatre company dedicated to programming for mature audiences. It is the Resident Theatre Company at Queens University of Charlotte.
Low ticket sales, exacerbated by the COVID 19 pandemic, was cited as one of the challenges that led to the decision to close the theater, WCNC reported.
The non-profit theatre was founded in 1989 "as a professional theatre to present bold and innovative new works by contemporary playwrights,” the group’s website states.
“Evil Dead the Musical” will be the final show at the theater, according to the group’s website. Performances run from Sept. 29 to Oct. 30 at the Barn at MoRA, near McAlpine Creek Park.
