Veterinarians, fresh off of making service adjustments during COVID-19, are now asking people whose pets might be suffering from kennel cough to abide by the pandemic-era restrictions to isolate their pets.

“We do have several more animals coming in with coughing and issues like that, which is why we have basically on our doors and everything letting them know if they’re showing coughing or anything like that, they do have to wait outside and give us a call,” an unidentified employee of Long Animal Hospital in Charlotte said in a WBTV report.

The Charlotte area has been seeing a rise in the number of kennel cough cases, forcing veterinary clinics and doggy daycares to implement the procedures, or in some cases close. Kennel cough is a respiratory disease that can spread quickly among dogs, especially when they mingle, even outdoors at dog parks.

Symptoms include things like the cough that gave the disorder its name, a runny nose, lethargy and loss of appetite. Kennel cough can be resolved through treatment in most cases, but it can be more severe in puppies, the report said, citing information from the American Kennel Club.

Owners of dogs that regularly socialize with other canines might want to ask their vet about administering a Bordetella vaccine to minimize risk. Some puppy parks and doggy daycare places actually require proof of an up-to-date vaccine.
