CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The winners of the 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards have been announced, recognizing individuals in the Charlotte community who have made significant contributions to bettering the community and honoring Dr. King's legacy.
The Growing the Dream Award, which acknowledges unsung heroes who foster unity and promote diversity and multiculturalism, has been awarded to eight deserving individuals. These winners have demonstrated leadership, a commitment to service, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Among the recipients are Derrik Anderson, Delvico Dunn, LaToya Faustin, Robyn Hamilton, Zandrea Lattimore Jones, Jamall Kinard, Rory Sheriff, and Gene Winchester.
In addition to the Growing the Dream Award, the 2024 Seed Award has been presented to Mark Jerrell, while James Ferguson Sr. has been honored with the 2024 Root Award. These awards recognize individuals who exemplify the work of Dr. King and inspire others through their actions.
The Medallion Award, the highest honor of the MLK Awards, has been bestowed upon John C. Barnett. Barnett, an educator, advocate, and warrior for the Black community, has been recognized for his unwavering commitment to promoting racial equality, social justice, and community service. Larry Mackey and Melanie Dunston, two other finalists for the Medallion Award, have been honored with Keeper of the Dream Awards for their efforts in the community.
The MLK Awards aim to celebrate and promote the ideals of Dr. King, including equality, nonviolence, and intergroup relations. These awards serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and diversity in our society.
