Charlotte FC announced today that the club has signed forward Yordy Reyna on a free transfer until 2023, with an option for 2024. Reyna will occupy an international roster spot.
The 28-year-old Peruvian international has spent the last six seasons in Major League Soccer (MLS) with the Vancouver Whitecaps and D.C. United. Reyna has played in 100 regular-season matches, recording 24 goals and 19 assists.
“Free agents are a great opportunity for us to continue adding experienced players in this league, and having Yordy in our attacking group is an important part of building our roster,” said Charlotte FC Sporting Director Zoran Krneta. "He is a very technical player with a lot of energy who can play on both wings and has a proven successful track record in MLS."
Reyna has played 28 matches for his country and participated in two FIFA World Cup qualifying cycles. He also played in the 2015 Copa America, where he started for Peru in a 2-0 victory over Paraguay in the third-place playoff.
Before joining MLS, Reyna came through Alianza Lima's academy, making 22 appearances in Peru's top division. His performance with Peru’s U-20 national team caught the attention of Red Bull Salzburg, which signed him in 2013. Reyna made 41 appearances in Austria’s Bundesliga between RB Salzburg and a loan spell at SV Grödig, scoring a total of 14 goals and providing eight assists.
Reyna also gained European experience playing in UEFA Champions League qualifiers and Europa League matches with RB Salzburg. Additionally, he spent time on loan at RB Leipzig when the club was competing in Germany’s second division (2. Bundesliga).
