NEW ORLEANS — The Panthers began their season with a 47-10 loss to the Saints, marked by early setbacks and consistent struggles throughout the game. The Saints scored a 59-yard touchdown pass within the first three minutes, followed by an interception on Bryce Young's first pass of the season.

The Saints capitalized on every opportunity, scoring on all six of their first-half drives. The Panthers did not cross midfield until the final minute of the second quarter, allowing them to score a field goal as time expired. Young opened the second half with another interception and finished with 13 completions out of 30 attempts for 161 yards, two interceptions, and four sacks. His passer rating was 32.8, the lowest of his career. Backup Andy Dalton replaced him in the final two minutes.

The defeat's margin was one of the worst in franchise history, following losses in Oakland (2000), Atlanta (2002), and San Francisco (2019). Jonathan Mingo's end-around run resulted in a fumble despite its initial promise.

Young scored his first career rushing touchdown in the third quarter after a review overturned an initial fumble ruling at the 1-yard line.

Defensive issues compounded offensive struggles. The Saints scored on their first nine possessions without punting until the game's final five minutes. Derek Carr completed 19-of-23 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns while leading a rushing attack that gained 180 yards. Eku Leota recorded one sack for Carolina.

Special teams also faltered with a blocked punt in the fourth quarter.

Rookie tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders, starting due to injuries to Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas, had a holding penalty that nullified a promising drive initiated by Miles Sanders' 14-yard gain. Third-round linebacker Trevin Wallace was penalized for holding on a kickoff return, leading to poor field position and subsequent scoring opportunities for New Orleans.

It was an overall challenging day for Carolina's rookies and veterans alike.
