Bryce Young goes "right back to work" after quarterback change

Sep 18, 2024

CHARLOTTE — When Bryce Young walked onto the practice field Wednesday, it didn't look any different than usual. Apart from taking scout team reps instead of first-team work and Andy Dalton having a press conference in his place, the scene remained largely unchanged.

However, circumstances have shifted as Young is now the backup while Dalton starts against the Raiders. Panthers head coach Dave Canales emphasized that Young still has a role and expectations within the team.

"Right back to work," Canales said when asked how Young responded. "Dove into the game plan. We had our conversations in the QB room just going around, talking about reads, talking about what we see from the defense, followed it up with a great day on the field, some fantastic throws, and just got right back to work, which is exactly what I expected him to do."

Young's status has become a significant topic this week. However, those close to him maintain that their discussions remain routine. Although Young did not speak to reporters Wednesday (he is expected to talk on Thursday), Canales was straightforward when addressing questions about Young's future.

When asked about speculation that Young could be traded, Canales replied: "It's not something we're really considering."

"We have a great situation," he continued. "With our quarterbacks right now, with guys that have experience. So we love where we're at, and we're all hands on deck. We're focused on playing the Raiders this week."

Regarding whether Young still had a future with the team or could be a franchise quarterback, Canales stated: "Absolutely. This is a developmentally-minded program. So the development didn't stop... Every rep he's out there... we're fully committed to that role."

"He took a lot of scout reps today," Canales added. "He was in competition periods with mixed groups... He did a fabulous job today... that's the expectation."

Asked if he was concerned about Young's confidence, Canales said: "My concern is the football team... everything we got because we have a really good opponent who just came off of a good road win."

Dalton acknowledged the awkwardness since Monday's change but highlighted his bond with Young since spring 2023 and noted his understanding of both sides of such transitions.

"Bryce has been awesome," Dalton said. "It's a tough situation on everybody... Bryce and I's friendship goes beyond just who's out there."

Veteran right tackle Taylor Moton also expressed confidence in Young despite his changed role.

"I believe that Bryce is a tremendous quarterback... he'll bounce back on his feet and do whatever he can to be at his best," Moton said.
